Storage Sheds

Storage Sheds

The word shed originated in the English language. And, as most of us know, the UK is a country of avid gardeners. Surveys suggest, around a quarter of UK residents have one. Their love of sheds has even been the inspiration of a new book, 'Men and Sheds'.

But the fact is, storage sheds are a great asset to the whole family, no matter which country you live in. An excellent place to store garden equipment, bicycles, tools, just about everything and anything! There are lots of designs available, plus a choice of materials. Which shed is best, will depend on what you individual needs are. Sheds are just so versatile, from the small garden shed to large workshops are available. Sheds have been around, virtually since time began. Built by prehistoric people and the early Egyptians. What do you think an Eskimo lives in? It might be made of ice, called an igloo, but basically, it's still just a shed!

The primary use of sheds tend to be storage, or workshops. Storage is an issue for many people, especially those with a young children. What to do with the paddling pools and bicycles during the winter months? There is no doubt about it, men love their sheds, many spending hours sorting and sifting, placing shelves and getting organised. Sheds can also be constructed for specific storage needs. Bicycle sheds incorporate an interior framework where multiple bicycles can be stored safely and can also be locked onto. Some of these sheds can be huge, and quite elaborate. Boat Sheds are mostly wooden, constructed near water, to store boats and other related equipment. A rowing club, for example, would have a large wooden shed to store the skiffs. Agricultural farm sheds are also large structures. Designed for storing farm equipment, hay, poultry, even livestock. Usually, these sheds will have three sides, not four.

Commercial storage sheds have always been essential to many private and public businesses. The railway has relied on them for years. The very first train shed was constructed in Crown Street Station in Liverpool, England. Many years ago, in eighteen hundred and thirty. Engine sheds are needed to repair and maintain engines. Goods Sheds, for all the goods and baggage that needs to be carried on an off the trains. Sturdy, wooden 'snow sheds' are also used to protect the tracks. Throughout the nineteenth century, the military also used sheds for storing just about everything. All kinds of military equipment, from guns to wagons! Large sheds are available for domestic use. Usually, they are made of wood, and can include all sorts of extras: Windows, electrics, even a shingled roof. There is no doubt, large sheds are the most versatile, not unheard of for people to even live in them!
