A curious word is it not? Shed! The good old Oxford Dictionary defines the word as, "slight structure built for shelter or storage, or for use as a workshop, either a separate building or attached to a permanent building as a lean-to; often with open front or sides." It can't be described it better than that! Or can it? Garden Sheds have been popular for eons.
Sheds for the garden do vary in size and complexity, quite dramatically. If you are thinking of purchasing one soon, it's a good idea to first assess how big a shed you need. What is your primary use? How secure does it need to be? Will it be holding valuable tools, maybe equine equipment? Or just the old pots and a bit of compost? The answers to these questions will dictate which shed you ultimately buy. With or without windows? Wood, Metal, or PVC? Need electric, or no? these are all things you need to consider. If your needs are not great, a small and simple shed will probably suffice. Corner sheds are great if you have an irregular shaped garden, or would prefer to 'tuck' you shed into a discreet corner of the garden. Vertical sheds give height, and depth, as opposed to Horizontal sheds which give width and depth.
If you have tools, smaller items, as well as possibly, lawnmowers, or other large equipment. Shelves and strong galvanised hooks, especially for tools etc, can also be purchased. This allows you to fully utilise the space you do have. Some sheds can be purchased with a 'Dutch Style' Gambrel roof. This can provide even more storage, as the sloping roof provides additional 'attic space'. Traditionally, sheds are fabricated entirely of wood. Today, many people opt for a durable plastic, PVC panelling, built over a wooden frame. Also popular is metal panels over a metal frame. Like most things, there will be advantages and disadvantages for all materials, shapes and sizes. Metal is great for keeping back the bugs, is fire resistant, however, it will rust, eventually. Especially if the steel is not galvanised. Galvanised, aluminium, and corrugated iron sheds are also vulnerable to high winds. Whichever of the available garden sheds you purchase, all of them will provide the essential storage you need.
